Tuesday Tip (May 11, 2021) - Don't Talk!

By Clayton T. Robertson (Criminal Defense / Civil Litigation Attorney)

Always invoke your right to remain silent, even before the commencement of any formal criminal proceedings against you.

So, when a detective comes knocking on your door to ask you questions about an incident in which you are the accused, it almost always heads in the wrong direction. Don't try to outsmart them. Simply, and politely, inform the detective you'd rather have an attorney present for any questions, and then decline to make any more statements or give any more answers (other than to repeat your request for an attorney).
